Spiritual Trajectory.

In Joshua 1:7 God is instructing the newly appointed leader. Joshua has never done this job before. He's not entirely convinced that it fits his skill set. Can you IMAGINE how that feels.(wink wink) ... We can read God's encouragement to him throughout the passage and infer that God knew exactly what he was up against. God explicitly tells Joshua multiple times in quick succession to "be strong and courageous" ,"be strong and very courageous" and "do not be terrified; do not be discouraged" and then he says "do not turn to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go." I dont think God was just saying "walk around with confidence even when you don't feel it"... Im thinking about the whole verse almost like God is honing a blade or straightening a path for Joshua. Not "fake it till you make it" but "Let me teach you the skills you need to succeed."
It's not surprising that this concept of "straigh ahead- no turning" is God's design for success. If we look to laws of physics—specifically kinematics and energy efficiency you can't miss the straight line. A straight line is God's favorite way to conserve energy, minimize friction, and maximize momentum and he reveals it all over nature and in us!
1.A Straight Line is the Shortest Distance : God does not intend for our lives or our spiritual walks to be labyrinths of wasted wandering. When God told Joshua not to turn"to the right or to the left," He was prescribing the shortest path to the fulfillment of His purpose. Every degree of deviation from a straight line introduces "displacement without progress". In life, when we turn to the right and worry ourselves sick or turn to the left and fall into busy work, we drastically increase the distance we must travel to reach our destination, adding unnecessary miles and and constant reroutings.
2.A Straight Line is Energy Conserving: God doesn't want us running a serpentine race. Every time we zig or zag, we use up much needed energy. Imagine running a marathon, but you have to cross the street every 5 feet. Obvioulsy you'd end up running additonal miles for no reason, but you'd also be much more exhausted at the finish line than any of the rest of your competitors. I'm convicted here of all the times I've been tempted to PRE-stress over something that may or may not even be in the path ahead. Worry, anxiety, pre-stress, overthinking, stewing and brooding and stiring up agony for myself all seem to turn my head... and waste my energy. A straight line to God seems to minimizes the internal friction of guilt, double-mindedness, and course correction... and consistent reliance on HIM feels much more energy-efficient.
3.A Straight Line Builds Momentum: Newton’s First Law states that an object in motion stays in motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an external force. Momentum is easiest to maintain when velocity is maintained in one direction. God couples the command of the "straight line" directly with the promise: "that you may be successful wherever you go." And I hate to mix my 2 areas of geekiness into one thought... but the word for success in Hebrew (הצלחה "hatzlacha") carries the idea of overcoming barriers, and continuous forward momentum. When we maintain a singular direction, our momentum compounds. Every time we yield to an external force—distraction, fear, or outside pressure—our velocity drops, and we waste massive amounts of energy just trying to get started again.
Where are you expending energy that propels you forward in God's straight line... and how can you maximize that habit or enhance that behavior?
What are the forces that try to push you off a straight trajectory and how can you minimize "side to side" course corrections and distractions?
If a straight line represents the most efficient path to kingdom impact (SUCCESS), what "excess weight" or aerodynamic drag do you need to cut from your calendar to optimize your spiritual focus?
Thank You, God, for the precise engineering of Your Word and the clarity of Your commands. Your created the physical universe to intricately teach is about yourself and your will for us! It's clear you've called us to walk a straight path, no turning to the right or to the left. Forgive us for the times we have allowed distractions to alter our trajectory, to amplify friction, to add to exhaustion, and increasing the distance we have to cover.
Today, we ask for the strength and courage commanded from Joshua. Streamline our focus. Eliminate the heavy drag of extra weight on our calendars. Reduce the inefficiency of double-minded zig zag living. We don't want to "spill" our energy. We want to deliberately pour it out where it is needed most- and we need your guidance to do that! We surrender our own plans and align our hearts fully with Your forward trajectory. We trust that Your way is the best way.
Holy Spirit guide us and help us maintain a divine momentum. When external forces and internal unease try to push us off course, let Your truth be our focus, and keep our velocity steady. We commit to conserve our energy for Your kingdom (where it's intended to be spent), and rest in the promise that You will grant us true success wherever we go.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
