a Safe Distance

When God shows up and uses it all.

This week, God has rendered me speechless several times! I know, few people have ever seen me at a loss for words, but this week I have been completely dumbfounded and unable to express what’s being downloaded into my spirit. This morning, I decided to FORCE the words out… Bear with me.

Most of the time I think of technology as cold and sort of separate from “in real life”. In general, when I want to truly connect with someone, I prefer an in person encounter or at the very least a voice conversation. Nonetheless, I find myself making quick arrangements and asking quick questions via text ALL. THE. TIME. And as convenient as texting and email are… the FLAW is the lack of personal contact.

Oh, but wait until the spirit of God breathes! Like a flower that pushes its way through a crack in the cold hard sidewalk, God will use even the flaws and deficits of technology to create beauty!

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had some incredible conversations via text. I led one young lady to the Lord by typing out prayers for her to repeat. Our prayer team was standing by, praying as I typed. And yesterday I sent some simple encouragement to a stranger who reached out for advice. At the end of our conversation she said “ I just needed Hope! Thanks for taking the time to make sure my kids have what they need. We appreciate you. But honestly, I just needed hope!” I think these ladies reached out via text for the EXACT reason that I “prefer not to”. I think the impersonal nature of it gave them just enough distance to be vulnerable but feel safe. I don’t think either of them would have had these conversations in person, or even on a phone call.

The flaw created the opportunity… Like a crack in the concrete leaves room for a seed to grow.

I’ve been thinking about my own fault lines and deficits lately. How I’m just not solid enough to cover all the ground I need to cover. And God has been reminding me that sometimes the flaw creates the opportunity. He is showing me that my imperfections and limitations actually leave room for faith to spread and grow in my life. I hope that is encouraging to you today.

Let’s commit it all to God’s glory today! Not just our extraordinary gifts and top tier talents, not just the moments and practices we are proud of… but let’s offer up those cracks and flaws for Him to use as well! And when we feel like we aren’t worthy, let’s remember that Jesus uses flawed systems, flawed tools and flawed people to share HOPE with a flawed world. May He use every weakness to show His strength and every gap to bring forth HIS beauty! ~Amen
